Zamfara Massacre: Over 160 children orphaned, 42 women widowed


Families of the 35 people who lost their lives in the aftermath of the recent onslaught carried out by armed bandits in Birane Community of Zurmi Local Government Area, Zamafa state received relief support from the state government.

The relations of the victims directly received cash, food stuffs, clothing materials and other household items to cushion their plight. More than 160 children were orphaned and not less than 42 women widowed as a result of the carnage unleashed by men of the underworld.

A team of #NEMA officials led by Head of Operations, Nema Sokoto Mallam Suleiman Muhammad were at scene of the incident for an on-the-spot Assessment to ascertain the extent of the damages recorded following the attack. The team also visited the injured victims who also received cash assistance from the state government.
Information gathered from affected victims who escaped the attack by whisker stated that the incident occurred as a result of a gun battle between the community vigilantes who were trying to stop the armed bandits from going into the community as it was a market day.
However, the happy trigger gunmen laid ambush to a canter vehicle carrying traders to the community market and started shooting sporadically and indiscriminately.

With the view to determine the extent of the damaged and to ascertain those affected, the agency staff who conducted the assessment will forward a comprehensive report to the federal government for necessary intervention.
